Is Bac Ha the ‘next Sapa’?

This slightly scrappy, but beautiful village 65km east of Lao Cai (about two hours by motorbike) is hoping so. Reached on lovely mountain roads, Bac Ha is in the heart of a far less jaded traditional markets and villages that see a burst of foreign faces for its famed Sunday market, then nada the rest of the week. Not yet equipped for big-time groups (there’s no ATM or the blur of travel agencies you see in Sapa), the town doesn’t quite offer Sapa’s Mt Fansipan views either, and its 400m lower elevation means warmer days. But it’s an intriguing spot for getting out and seeing what happens. You’re certainly far less likely to be hassled.
