Old Quarter hotels are broken down into three budget groups below (Above $50, $25 to $50, & Under $25) and listed by preference.

Above $50

HOTEL ELEGANCE 2
A cut above many in the area, this rather slick hotel is all new, with modern arm chairs, dark-wood floors and computers in its 40 rooms. The US$35 rooms are the smallest, but have windows too. There’s free WiFi, elevator and free breakfast. As the name suggests, they have another location (8 Hang Bac St).
Tel 04-926-2854; www.hanoielegancehotel.com; 85 Ma May St; rooms including breakast US$35-60

QUEEN TRAVEL
The Queen boasts the best possible version of a central budget hotel – stylish rooms, great staff, a bridge over a pond in the lobby, past guests’ acclaim and an elevator. Too bad it’s priced like an upper mid-ranger. The comfortable rooms have ceiling fans and air-con, WiFi access, wood floors. Some have balconies and DVD players. It’d be a no-brainer if you get quoted a US$40 rate.
Tel 04-826-0860; www.queencafe.com.vn, [email protected]; 65 Hang Bac St; rooms including breakfast US$65-95

$25 to $50

SUNSHINE HOTEL
Great budget hotel with a dozen clean rooms, some with balconies. Staff run travel services, but don’t push trips. The US$30 rooms have computers with Internet access. No lift.
Tel 04-926-1559; www.hanoisunshinehotel.com, [email protected]; 42 Ma May St; rooms including breakfast US$20-30

VIET ANH I & II
A slight upgrade from the usual crew, the 26-room Viet Anh I has a doorman and nicely decorated rooms with WiFi access, and a bit of pomp in the downstairs lobby (where the free buffet breakfast’s served). If the price is too high, trade in the elevator and wood floors for stairs and carpeted rooms at Viet Anh II around the corner.
Tel 04-926-1302; www.vietanhhotel.com, [email protected]; 11 May May St; rooms in Viet Anh I US$25-40, Viet Anh II US$18

GOLD SPRING HOTEL
Away from the main Old Quarter buzz, the Gold Spring gets you a bit more style than some – with soothing cream-colors, wood-cut engravings on ceilings and wood floors. No breakfast.
Tel 04-926-3057; www.goldspringhotel.com.vn, [email protected]; 22 Nguyen Huu Huan St; rooms US$35 & US$45

HONG NGOC
Part of yet another Hanoi mini-chain, the seven-floor Hong Ngoc is the sort of place you could put up a picky mom in a pinch. Rooms have ornate wood bed frames, traditional paintings on the creamy pink walls and spacious bathrooms. Front rooms have balconies – though that Hang Bac St is a mother of traffic; it’s better to be in back (from US$35). Lobby computers to use.
Tel 04-926-0322; www.hongngochotels.com, [email protected]; 39 Hang Bac St; rooms including breakfast from US$30-40

Under $25

DISCOVERY HOTEL
Just off a main backpacker strip, in a tiny alley, this family-run guesthouse offers six clean tiled rooms for a few dollars less than many in the area. All rooms have a tiny balcony. Lobby computer, no breakfast.
Tel 04-926-2462; www.discoveryhotel9.com, [email protected]; 22 Luong Ngoc Quyen St; singles/doubles US$10/12

CENTRAL STARS HOTEL
A bit removed from the backpacker bustle, this alley 20-room hotel gets the budget-bound what it needs: OK rooms with balconies, unnecessary ceiling moldings and faded pink walls. Free Internet use. Cheapest rooms have no windows.
Tel 04-926-2563; [email protected]; 8 Dao Duy Tu St, off Ta Hien St; rooms including breakfast US$10-18

CLASSIC 1 HOTEL
A few feet from the bia hoi corner, the Classic has 36 OK traditional-style rooms with garish tile floors and some nicks, but all’s clean and there’s a lift. It’s about US$5 more than it should be, though the US$30 room has its own computer.
Tel 04-826-6224; www.hanoiclassichotel.com, [email protected]; 22A Ta Hien St; rooms including breakfast US$18-30
